Our big family event this past week was James' soccer tournament in Bakersfield. We got to leave our house about 5:30 AM, and drive 2 1/2 hours (with somewhat faulty directions at the end). Then James got to play 3 soccer games, and we drove home. All the games were very close, and his team did pretty well. They won the first game 2-0, were leading 3-1 in the second going into the final quarter (ending up with a 3-3 tie), and lost the third game 3-2. James played extremely well on defense--he plays sweeper, and did an excellent job of shutting down the other teams' scorers. I like to think it's more than coincidence that the other teams scored most of their goals when James was sitting out.
All in all it was a fun time, mild sunburns and all. Though we still have yet to discover the reason why it's so difficult for everyone to remember to bring shoes on a trip like this, or what's so alluring about a $2.50 miniature cup of shaved ice when you're bundled up in a blanket to keep warm.
Coming up next-- Roadshow!

Sweeper is important; I know this because Olivia's team lost every single game and scored only one point when a coach on another team told her players to let us score just once so our team wouldn't feel bad. I won't tell you whose daughter was also put on defense.
